Bóthar Transparency

The recent events in the charity sector have highlighted the need for greater transparency. In order to run efficiently and effectively, charities have to be business-like in their approach. With this comes accountability and transparency, especially as we are managing donations from the public. In order to be as transparent as possible, we keep a full copy of our accounts here

Here are some questions that we’ve answered. If there’s something that you want to know more about please contact us by calling 061 41 41 42 or email info@bothar.org

What is the CEO salary?
Bóthar's CEO is paid €88,000 per year.  His salary is decided by the Bóthar Board, based on the skills and responsibility that the role commands. There are no expense accounts, top-up payments, bonuses or company cars. Essentially the CEO oversees 64 projects annually across 20 countries, managing a staff of 19, overseeing the running of six offices and managing the overall budget.

What was the total spend on salaries in 2012?
€507,658

What is Bóthar’s income?
Our income in 2012 was €6.9 million and 97% of general public donations went directly to our projects across 20 countries in the developing world. We have managed to keep this margin thanks to the generosity of a small number of corporate/private donations, which cover specific infrastructural and administrative costs, and to our sister organization Heifer International, who administer a large portion of our international projects. This partnership with Heifer avoids duplication and, therefore, ensures maximum impact from donations to Bóthar.

Does Bóthar receive any state-funding?
Bóthar receives a small amount of state funding and this goes directly to designated field projects.  Bóthar received a total of €100,000 state funding from Irish Aid for a specific project in Zambia in 2012 and forwarded €150,400 to the project 2 weeks later.

Addressing Administration Costs:
Our total income/expenditure margin of 18% was lower when we were in receipt of €10m plus revenue.  Since 2008 we have been adopting a cost cutting policy across all areas of our organisation and we will continue to do so this year. We have already implemented a range of cost management cuts, including redundancies and salary cuts. We have at the same time tried to minimise job losses in so far as we could while at the same time continuing all our international project work.

Is the organisation signed up to the charities corporate governance code?
Yes, Bóthar is fully committed to achieving the standards contained within the Statement of Guiding Principles for Fundraising.

Is Bóthar involved in delivering humanitarian and emergency aid?
Bóthar is not a relief agency. Our role in times of emergency is limited to short- term provisional support
– food, water and other essentials.  Our focus then shifts to support the implantation of long term development programmes.

Without your support, we would not to be able to lift these families out of poverty.

Thank you for your continued support.
