You will by now have heard of the devastating typhoon that has wreaked destruction throughout the Philippines.
Typhoon Haiyan struck the Philippines with gusts of up to 200 mph resulting in extensive flooding and wind damage. Many of our projects have been affected and families will need to rebuild their lives all over again. Preliminary damage reports are coming in from the Philippines, and while we are still awaiting word from country staff on how projects are faring, we know winds and rain from typhoon Haiyan are lashing eastern provinces, whipping up 12- to 15-foot waves, and felling trees in others.
We also know that there are families there that will need our help to help them to rebuild their lives.
While the typhoon is expected to affect a wide section of the island nation, Bóthar and it's project partners, Heifer International, are concerned about 11 current and former project sites. Those sites are in Leyte, Southern Leyte, Northern Samar, Surigao Del Norte, Surigao Del Sur, Agusan Del Norte, Camarines Norte, Camarines Sur, Albay, Negros Oriental and Agusan del Sur.
We have heard good reports from all of the staff members since the storm struck.
As soon as we know the extent of the damage to our projects we will work to supplement the efforts of local relief organisations to help our farmers recover.
